Welcome

Welcome to Soaring Heart Natural Bed Company. We've been building mattresses and futons by hand in Seattle since 1982. That's 28 years, if you're keeping track! If you find yourself in or near Seattle, please come and visit our cozy, peaceful showroom.

And just what has been driving us to build our natural mattresses and futons for over a quarter of a century? Well, we believe that a bed is so much more than just a place to lie down at the end of the day. When properly chosen, a bed can be a truly transformative place that relaxes and rejuvenates both body and mind, relieves physical and mental stress, and improves the overall quality of waking life for both the sleeper and everyone he or she interacts with throughout the day. This positive ripple effect caused by people experiencing profoundly healing and restorative sleep is something we humbly and hopefully consider to be our ultimate contribution to the world.

Here on the website, just as we would in our Seattle store, we invite you to wander around at your own pace, freely discovering whatever catches your eye and spending time exploring things that interest you.

Showroom at night.

To learn just about everything there is to know about our natural beds and what goes into our products, our Natural Bedding Guide is an amazing resource. There you'll find the answers to almost any question you can dream up. Of course, if you'd like to ask us about something specific instead of reading through everything, we're open every day, and we're here to help, so feel free to call, email, or visit us.

Even if you don't end up purchasing your natural bed from us (although we hope you do!), we're happy to contribute our years of knowledge to your research. If anything you learn here ultimately leads you to the bed that's perfect for you, wherever it comes from, we've done a big part of our job. Thank you so much for visiting us and letting us help you decide.

If you've visited us in the past, enjoyed your experience in our store and you'd like other people to know about your wonderful new bed, please stop by our Yelp.com page and write a review. Word of mouth has always been our best friend in the past, and these days the internet is really just a fancy way of spreading the word. Thanks in advance!

What You'll Find In Our Store

We've been in our current location for over 20 years now, and in that time our space has evolved into a beautiful, tranquil environment where you can lie down, relax, and stay as long as you need to find the mattress that's right for you. Quiet your mind and let your body tell you what feels the most comfortable. Bring a favorite pillow or blanket, if you want. Fall asleep if you feel like it (people often do!).

If it's information you're after, feel free to ask us whatever questions you may have. We'll chat with you as much or as little as you like, and since we don't work on commission, there's never any sales pressure. We're actually more likely to talk you out of buying things you don't need. Imagine that!

Foyer again.

Our eclectic staff of artists and musicians handcrafts our mattresses and futons right here at the store, infusing them with healthy doses of laughter, music, and wonderful energy (if you're into that kind of thing). There's no factory or warehouse - really! Our easygoing workshop is active 7 days a week (we'll let you take a peek if you like), and we try to keep a selection of our most popular items already built, so in many cases you can take your mattress home that same day. If we need to build your order from the ground up, it generally only takes us a week or two to complete it.

In addition to our handmade natural mattresses & futons, you'll also find just about everything you need to design your ideal bed setup, from sustainable wood frames to natural pillows, organic cotton sheets and blankets, and natural comforters.

We also offer a selection of gorgeous sofa frames, coffee tables, and other accessories from our friends at Night & Day Furniture. You'll be amazed at how far the humble futon frame has come in the last few years. We keep about a half dozen of their styles on hand, and we can order anything from their catalog and have it in our store in about a week. Feel free to browse their offerings at www.nightanddayfurniture.com to find a style you like, then contact us for prices.

A peek inside a futon
Rebuilding Your Futon

Over the lifetime of your futon, wool topper, or pillow, the day may come when it doesn't feel quite as comfortable as it did when it was new. Natural fibers do compress, after all. Fortunately, since we make our products right here in the store, we can easily rebuild and restore your bed. We don't charge for labor, and usually all it takes to make an old futon feel brand new is a couple fresh layers of cotton or wool which can cost substantially less than buying a new bed. Plus, a rebuild usually only takes us one day to complete. Just be sure to call us beforehand to schedule a rebuild appointment.

We can even rebuild futons made by another manufacturer, as long as the case has a three-sided zipper. For us to work on another company's bed, we do charge an additional $40/hr.

In some cases we may be unable to to work on your bed, so we generally need to see the futon in person before we can say for sure if a rebuild is possible. Call us so our production manager can schedule the best time to bring in your bed for a consultation. It is important to note that we cannot work on a futon that has mold anywhere on it, so if this has happened, your best bet is to take care of it at home or purchase a new bed. For instructions on how to treat mold and mildew at home, please see the "How To Care For Your Natural Fiber Bed" section of the Natural Bedding Guide.

Cover fabrics.
And more...

We have dozens of ready-made decorative throw pillows, futon covers, and bolsters in our showroom, and we've got hundreds of fabrics in our store from which to have a futon cover or throw pillows made. We send away for most covers, and since we have them custom made to our specifications, they usually take 14 business days to complete (about three weeks, total).

We can also make custom-sized futons, so give us a call if you have a custom question and we'll let you know if your idea is something we can bring to life and how long it may take. To make one of our beds just a few inches thinner, wider, longer or shorter than a standard bed size, we usually just charge an additional 10% of the regular price of the most similarly-built item. Please note that when dealing with malleable materials like cotton and wool batting, measurements will never be exact, so make sure to keep that in mind when inquiring about a custom item.

We also carry tatami mats in our store in both American and traditional Japanese sizes to use either on slats on the floor, or as part of a raised platform frame underneath your futon. Tatamis provide the most consistent support, especially under thinner futons.

Our new delivery van!
Local Delivery Options & Shipping

We can deliver anything we sell right to your door - we'll even bring it in for you and set it up, if you like. Delivery charges within Seattle and nearby cities vary from zip code to zip code, so contact us and we'll let you know our current schedule and prices. Assembly price is separate from delivery and is $40 for the first item and $10 each additional item.

Of course, if you happen to live somewhere else in the country, we will happily ship any of our wonderful mattresses and futons directly to you. Simply add the desired items to your shopping cart, and your shipping will be calculated automatically. In most cases, total build & shipping time takes 2-3 weeks.

Please note that we cannot remove or haul away your old futon or mattress. For inexpensive (usually $30) mattress/bulky item collection in Seattle, please contact Seattle Public Utilities customer service at (206) 684-3000 to arrange a pickup.

We also don't recycle futons or mattresses here at Soaring Heart, but our friends Natural Felt Co. do accept drop-offs of futons (free) and innersprings ($15 fee) for recycling at their Kent facility. Apparently we swamped their phone lines when we posted their number, so they've asked people to simply drive by and drop off their recyclable futons & mattresses at their location, no phonecall necessary. They're located at 21817 88th Place South, Kent WA, 98031
