Crescent Moon uses 100% natural, organically grown alpaca wool. Alpaca fiber is hollow, making it one of the warmest natural fibers available. It is also very light and soft so we add some sheep wool to hold the fibers apart and produce more loft.
Alpaca fiber's porous nature is naturally dry and clean which prevents dust mites and other allergens from settling in. Recent research has found that dust mites are one of the most common causes of asthma and allergies in the bedroom.
The shorn animals are raised in a pesticide free environment and their wool is a renewable resource. No chemicals, dyes or bleaches are used when the wool is processed. We use only 100% organic cotton fabric so the whole product is 100% biodegradable at the end of its long life. Alpaca fiber loves fresh air and will re-loft when put outside for a few hours.

The support and stability of the Buckwheat Hull Pillow has been understood in Japan for centuries where it is a common complement to the shikibuton. The buckwheat hulls shift within the pillow molding the surface to the unique curvature of your neck, cradling the head perfectly as it aligns the spine. By keeping the spine in the neutral position and supporting the neck and head, the pillow relieves strain and stress in the muscles, and naturally opens airways, which provides an uninterrupted and more restorative sleep and can also help with neck pain, headaches, and snoring.
Our all-natural buckwheat hulls do not retain heat; their granular nature allows air to pass through and surround them, keeping your head cool during the night. Unlike many other pillow fills, Buckwheat Hull Pillows will not collapse or lose volume while you sleep,, providing sustained support for the neck, head, and shoulders all night long. This also makes Buckwheat Hull Pillows a long-lasting investment.
Our buckwheat hulls are hand roasted to insure their quality and longevity. Try microwaving or freezing your pillow (the small and minis) for a nice warm pillow to help relieve stress and aches.
Note: All pillow sales are final.
Our Organic Buckwheat Hull Pillows come in a variety of sizes:
Standard/Queen (10 lbs. - 19" X 25"): this large pillow is designed to fit your standard/queen pillowcase and is perfect for both back and side sleepers. At ten pounds, it is a heavy pillow, but its large fill amount gives it a very malleable surface that allows it to perfectly mold to each individual.
Medium 3.5 lbs. - 14" X 20"): slightly smaller and more lighter than the large version, the medium size is our most popular. Great for back and side sleepers alike, this versatile pillow has many applications.
Small (2.5 lbs. - 12" X 16"): a great pillow for a variety of uses. It makes a terrific back rest, lumbar support, and even a travel pillow. Pair with the Mini Organic Buckwheat Hull Pillow for extra neck support.
Mini (1 lb. - 7" X 12"): this size pillow is most often used in conjunction with another pillow, often being placed just under the neck for extra support or even over the eyes.
All Organic Buckwheat Hull Pillows, except the Standard/Queen size, come with one pillow case in addition to the zippered inner case.
Do not attempt to wash any pillows that are made with cotton batting or wool batting. They may be gently spot cleaned with water and mild detergent if necessary, but don't try to remove them or put them in the washing machine.
The only pillows that can be washed are the ones only containing wool bolus and shredded latex.

Everyone has the right to put a little luxury in their lives—or in the case of the Deluxe Organic Wool Topper—a lot of luxury. Twice the amount of wool than the Organic Wool Mattress Topper, the Deluxe Organic Wool Mattress Topper cradles the body, turning any mattress into a personal paradise. Sorry--getting out of the bed in the morning just got harder. In a good way.
Multiple layers of Premium organic wool batting, a blend of eight breeds of sheep’s wool, are layered and then hand-tufted inside of a silky-soft organic cotton sateen case. This extra thick mattress topper is perfect for side sleepers and people who suffer from joint and muscle pain, alleviating stress on the joints by elevating the body and easing strain on pressure points.
Wool is naturally insulating, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter, and makes sinking into the Deluxe Organic Wool Topper the highlight of your day every day of the year. When matched with wool's dust mite and mildew resistance--well, you can see why we love it so much.
Soaring Heart's mattress toppers were designed with our own mattress supports in mind, but will work wonderfully on any standard size mattress, instantly making an old bed feel like new again. Place on top of the mattress, but under the mattress pad (we recommend an all natural or organic pad) and sheets, where it will stay securely in place on your bed night after night. To prevent body moisture from getting into your bed (which can prematurely compress and harden the natural fibers and make your bed lumpy and uncomfortable), always sleep with one of our all natural organic cotton pads . Don't use a poly-blend pad. They aren't absorbent and can cause you to perspire more during sleep. Wash and dry your natural mattress pad with your sheets. Make sure the pad is completely dry before putting it back on your bed, and your mattress will stay clean and healthy for years to come.
Mattress toppers are designed to be fluffy and soft and therefore are susceptible to compression. Flip your mattress topper every other week (whenever you change your sheets) for long lasting comfort.
A couple times a year, on a sunny day, put your futon, shikibuton, or topper outside in the sun for an hour or two on each side. It's like giving your bed a natural dry-cleaning. The sun fluffs and revitalizes the fibers, discourages microbial growth, and evaporates any residual moisture. Does not apply to latex - latex can be deteriorated by sunlight.
Even if you lovingly follow all the steps listed above, there may come a day when your natural bed doesn't feel quite as comfortable as it originally did. In that case, feel free to click the button below to send us information about your product so we can schedule a revitalization time. Often times, all that's necessary to bring new life to your faithful futon is a few new layers of cotton or wool, and that can cost significantly less than a new bed. We do need to see it in person so we can assess what needs to be done, but once we figure it out we can usually finish the revitalization that same day.
For customers outside the Seattle Area who want to ship the item for revitalization services, simply put the item in a box, pay for shipping to our Seattle location and we will pay the shipping to return your revitalized item to you.

The Ergonomic Organic Latex Pillow is designed to provide exceptional support for the neck and head, relieving neck tension and strain. Its dual zones allow for both side and back sleepers to sleep comfortably as it cradles your head and provides your neck with extra support by forming to its unique curvature which alleviates strain on the muscles and vertebrae.
Keeping the neck, head, and spine properly aligned reduces tension and opens up your airways, which can decrease snoring and other sinus-related issues, promoting a deeper, more relaxing night's rest.
Like the Natural Latex Pillow, the Ergonomic Organic Latex Pillow will hold its shape for years, requiring no fluffing, shaking, or shaping. You get the same pillow every night, night after night and the latex's natural open cell structure doesn't retain body heat, thus keeping the pillow cool and you comfortable.

A mattress should enhance the life and health of person using it and our all-organic shikibuton represents that philosophy in its most pure and versatile form. Constructed of organic cotton & wool or organic latex, the layers are then hand-tufted by our skilled craftsman. The shikibuton is a flexible mattress that will work with your lifestyle and last a lifetime - making it just as at home in a suburban house as it is in an urban loft.

We recommend all futons and shikibutons be kept off the floor or folded and put away when not in use. Latex and innerspring mattress need to be kept on slats. Not keeping your latex or innerspring mattress on a slatted frame or foundation will void its warranty.
The more air that can circulate around all surfaces of your natural bed, the better. When not exposed to air, cotton can begin to mildew because the temperature difference between your body heat passing through the futon and the relative coldness of a non-breathable surface (the floor, solid plywood, etc...) can allow condensation to build up.
Make sure your organic futon or shikibuton wears evenly (avoiding body impressions) by flipping and rotating it regularly, so you end up sleeping on all different parts of the bed equally. We recommend doing this once a week for the first month, then once every other week thereafter.
A couple times a year, on a sunny day, put your futon, shikibuton, or topper outside in the sun for an hour or two on each side. It's like giving your bed a natural dry-cleaning. I love my handcrafted, organic, cotton and wool shikibuton! It is very comfortable, healthy, beautiful and versatile. Since moving to an organic bed, I no longer wake up stiff, achy or congested. I now get a deep sleep and wake up rested, refreshed and rejuvenated. Combined with the organic deluxe wool topper and tatami mats, it is truly the best bed I have ever owned. Thank you Soaring Heart Natural Beds!

I just got my shikibuton and love it! Thanks so much!
- Hannah Moore
Philosophically, I have changed my idea of comfort. Meaning this bed is not comfortable in the American traditional sense but in my idea of traditional sleep this hits the spot and is now very comfortable! I had some really bad SI joint problems that would leave me so locked up that getting out of my old bed was really a chore. This Shikibuton has been a major part in my arsenal to remedy my back problem and in general it fits my idea of simple living. Please let the company in some way know that I appreciate the work yall have done. Thank you again for getting me a deal on this shiki! I have recommended this to other friends.
- Nick
We purchased our first shikibuton, medium buckwheat pillows, mini buckwheat pillows, and wool mattress pad from Soaring Heart and we could not be happier! I did A LOT of research on shikibutons and somehow ended up on Soaring Heart. Not only are their online reviews fabulous but their customer service is phenomenal. We appreciate their ability to answer all our questions as well as their fabulous products. This is the best sleep we have ever had! We would highly recommend their shikbutons and pillows to everyone looking for great sleep that is good for the brain and body. The only thing we wish they had is a showroom in Minnesota!
Happy Holidays!
- Mandy
I got the organic latex shikibuton and the wool mattress pad. Love them both. The only problem I have is I now don't want to get up in the morning because I am too comfortable. Rob was great every step of the way-helping me with shipping to Alaska, which is a feat in itself sometimes.
Thank you!

This 100% natural moisture barrier is created without fillers or additives, making this woven wool textile the perfect chemical-free solution for mattress and topper protection. The wool is tightly woven and slightly felted, resulting in a natural water repellent fabric that’s a healthy and eco-friendly alternative to synthetic products.
The moisture barrier is designed to lay atop your mattress or topper and beneath a fitted sheet.
Keep in mind that with each washing there is the potential for slight shrinkage. Wash only as needed. With both methods described below, it's important that you skip the wash cycle. That wash cycle creates agitation, which can result in felted or ruined wool bedding. For top-load washers use soak and spin cycles only. Do not use the wash cycle, which agitates and ruins your items. Manually set cycles to soak and spin. Do not allow the machine to enter the wash cycle. Fill the machine with warm water. Add a small amount of biodegradable detergent or wool wash. Place the item in the machine, gently pushing to absorb the water. Let it soak. Skip all wash cycles. The wash cycle is where agitation happens. Instead, manually set to spin. Centrifugal force will spin the water out. Leave the item in the machine, allow to refill with warm water and soak. Follow with a spin cycle. Repeat as needed. Do not machine dry. Drape your items in the sun or a warm place to dry. For front load washers use the gentlest, shortest, and lowest-soil settings. Do not use the wash cycle, which agitates and can ruin your items. For best results, wash with a full load. Place your items in the machine and fill with warm water. Add a small amount of biodegradable detergent or wool wash to the dispenser. Let it soak. Skip all wash cycles. The wash cycle is where agitation happens. Instead, manually set to spin. Centrifugal force will spin the water out. Soak and spin. Leave the item in the machine and allow to refill with warm water and soak. Follow with a spin cycle. Repeat as needed. Do not machine dry. Drape your wool items in the sun or a warm place to dry.

This Millet & Wool Pillow's unique duel-chamber design allows you to get the best of both worlds; the supportive nature of millet and soft fluffy feel and cooling of wool. The millet, like the Latex Support in our latex mattresses, provides your with stable support, cradling your head in alignment with your spine and maintaining that position.
The pillows are made exclusively of natural millet seed, Premium Eco-Wool, and certified organic cotton. The finished pillow is about 25-30% wool and 70-75" millet.
The wool in the top chamber acts like a mattress topper, creating an additional layer of comfort over the millet, making the pillow softer without sacrificing any support. People also love the millet due to the gentle, soothing sounds of the seeds as they move into position (much quieter than a buckwheat pillow!).
Due to the firmness of buckwheat and millet, these pillows generally can't be used by side sleepers, as it can hurt their ears, but the simple yet brilliant duel-chamber design of the Millet & Wool Pillow lets everyone experience the incredible support of millet.

Moisture, mildew, and dust mite resistant – as well as thermal regulating – Premium Organic Wool, a blend of wool gathered from eight different sheep breeds, creates a protective barrier around the organic cotton core of the Organic Cotton & Wool Futon, giving you a longer lasting mattress that is supremely comfortable.
Our futons are encased in 100% organic cotton twill.
Soaring Heart's Organic Cotton & Wool Futons make great organic mattresses for anyone who enjoys the classic firm feel of a futon or is trying to better utilize their space. An organic futon can fold, which make them perfect for studios, small apartments, multipurpose rooms, or a comfy, healthy guest bed (for use in a sofa set-up we recommend the Organic Cotton, Latex & Wool Futon, because the organic latex core reduces creasing where the futon folds – that “fold crease” can make other futons less comfortable when slept on). When we say all natural and organic, we mean it. Since 1982 Soaring Heart Natural Bed Company has been making mattresses and bedding using time-tested techniques, honed and polished over three decades. Soaring Heart makes everything by hand and uses only the highest quality, certified organic, materials available.
Soaring Heart works closely with our suppliers. We travel to their operations, getting to know them and their materials. We collaborate with our suppliers so we can meet and exceed our exacting standards. We take huge pride in our products and in all the people behind them.
It's because of these special relationships with our suppliers and their wonderful organic wool, organic latex, organic cotton and their commitment to upholding organic certifications that we aren’t forced to spoil our products with chemicals or synthetics. No Soaring Heart product has any chemical-based foam or synthetic fire retardants whatsoever.
Our latex is made from pure rubber tree sap, we use organic wool as our fire barrier and it is selected from only the finest sheep farms in New Zealand, and our Cotton is 100% organically grown in the cotton fields of Texas. Nothing but good, honest organic materials provided by good, honest people.
The wool and cotton encasements in this product are GOTS certified.
We recommend all futons and shikibutons be kept off the floor.
For customers outside the Seattle Area who want to ship the item for revitalization services, simply put the item in a box, pay for shipping to our Seattle location and we will pay the shipping to return your revitalized item to you .

The Organic Cotton & Wool Shikibuton takes the traditional cotton shikibuton and goes it one better by adding a layer of insulating, moisture resistant and fluffy 100% organic wool while still utilizing the traditional Japanese construction methods established centuries ago.
The cotton and wool construction shares the same contemporary look, supportive feel, and versatility of our Organic Cotton Shikibuton, but has the added benefits of organic wool – moisture resistance, thermal regulation, and mildew resistance - creating a more comfortable sleep experience and a longer lasting bed (the wool acts as a protective layer around the cotton).
Our shikibutons are made from layers of 100% organic cotton and wool encased in 100% organic cotton twill and then hand-tufted for long lasting comfort.
Surprisingly lightweight at approximately four inches thick (we build by weight), our shikibutons are easily folded and stored to make better use of your space and are instantly available for overnight guests. And if you want to keep the versatility of the shikibuton but want a softer sleep experience, try layering two or more shikibutons on top of each other or adding a topper for a customized and customizable bed set-up.
Organic shikibutons work best when used with a Tatami Frame and Tatami Mat set-up, which best emulates the traditional tatami mat flooring used in Japan. Preferable to the floor or bed slats (slats can be felt through a single or even two shikibutons), tatami mats allow the shikibuton to rest on a flat, solid surface while still being able to properly breathe. Good ventilation will make your shikibuton last longer. For a truly traditional experience, match your new shikibuton with an Organic Buckwheat Pillow.
Our shikibutons, like all of Soaring Heart's mattresses, are made of only the highest quality materials using time-honored construction techniques. Your shikibuton should last you eight to ten years with proper maintenance (see care tab), although we have many customers who are still comfortably using Soaring Heart shikibutons bought fifteen years ago.

Looking for the most luxurious organic futon out there? You found it. Our Organic Cotton Latex & Wool Futon layers organic cotton and wool around a supple, 100% organic, GOLS certified Dunlop latex core encased in organic cotton twill. The latex core gives the Organic Cotton Latex & Wool Futon unprecedented comfort and contouring in a futon style mattress and is hand-tufted for superior longevity. This is not your parents’ futon.
These are, quite simply, the ideal mattresses for anyone who prefers a soft, yet supportive bed and/or is trying to better utilize their space. An organic futon can fold into a couch or lounger, which makes them perfect for studios, small apartments, multipurpose rooms, or a healthy and comfy guest bed. And our Organic Cotton, Latex & Wool Futon is the best organic futon to use in a sofa set-up - the organic latex core reduces creasing where the futon folds; creases can make futons less comfortable when slept on.
All Soaring Heart organic futons are handmade from only the highest quality organic materials using time honored techniques practiced, honed and perfected over the past 30 years. You can expect your new organic futon to last you anywhere from eight to fifteen years, depending upon how well you maintain it. Futons require occasional flipping so that they wear evenly.
At full, original loft, the layers of cotton, latex and organic wool that make up each Soaring Heart futon measure 24” tall, give or take, only compressing down to the more familiar seven inches after passing through the skilled hands of our craftspeople. Once slept on for a while, your new organic futon will settle down to six or seven inches. To see measurements, click the size guide button above.
