The Soaring Heart Secret Formula

Soaring Heart Natural Beds mattresses are different from other mattresses. To begin with, they use only the finest quality locally-sourced natural and organic materials and each mattress is handcrafted by experienced artisan bed-makers using techniques honed over 30 years leading the industry. But they look different too—they are layered.

And they're layered for a reason. The purpose of a mattress is to provide you with an incredibly relaxing, restorative and, most importantly, comfortable night's rest. In order to achieve this, mattress makers use a variety of materials designed for different functions: support, softness, spine alignment, protection. Each function is unique and requires materials with different properties--and therefore, different care needs.

Other manufacturers combine all these functions into a single unit. This necessitates compromise-- on comfort; on proper back, neck, and hip support; and on suitable care. With this type of mattress, either it needs to be flipped regularly, which is ungainly and difficult, or it can't be flipped at all, which leads to the mattress compressing, and deteriorating until it must be replaced.

Soaring Heart Natural Bed Company designed our mattresses in layers, building each separate piece with the exact materials uniquely suited for its particular function: resilient and contouring organic latex for unparalleled support; soft and luxurious organic wool for supreme comfort; and American-grown long fiber organic cotton for superior durability. Each piece can be cared for separately, making your mattress a long-lasting investment in your good health and happiness.

Soaring Heart Layering System?

FOUNDATION LAYER

Everything great starts withFoundation layer
a good foundation. Soaring Heart Natural Bed Company's organic mattresses are no different. The proper frame is vital to the
longevity and functionality of your new mattress. All mattresses, not just Soaring Heart mattresses, require air circulation to avoid mildew, mold, and compaction. We have a variety of sustainable frames with a selection of different aesthetics, from Japanese Tatami Frames to craftsman style maple frames, that provide a solid base for your mattress while allowing proper air circulation.

SUPPORT LAYER

The support layer does the heavy lifting, cradling your body so that your neck, spine, and hips are held in proper alignment. We have a variety of supports: supple organic latex, flexible innersprings, and the unrivaled five-zoned organic latex. Each support is made with impeccable craftsmanship to insure you a supportive, comfortable night's rest for years to come.

Our resilient supports only need to be flipped every 3-6 months and carry our 20 Year warranty.

COMFORT LAYER

The comfort layer envelops you in a cloud of softness. The mattress topper lifts and surrounds the body, forming to all your curves , and easing joint pain, releasing muscle strain and tension, and taking stress off of pressure points. Comfort is different for different people and we have a mattress topper for everyone, from supple yet firm latex to luxuriously thick Pacific Northwest organic wool.

The soft fibers and airy latex used in our toppers require flipping every other week, or when you change your sheets.

PROTECTION LAYER

The mattress pad, the last layer of a Soaring Heart mattress, protects the mattress from you. The average person loses around a pint of moisture every night. Some of that moisture goes into the air through our breath, but the rest goes out through our skin—and into whatever we happen to be lying on. A natural or organic mattress pad absorbs and wicks away moisture, protecting your mattress.

Wash your mattress pad with your sheets for optimal protection.

Assesing Your Comfort Needs

Everyone is unique. We have different weights, heights, and shapes. We grew up in different circumstances, we've had different experiences. The combination of these elements makes each individual, well, individual. That individuality also means we have varying comfort needs. What one person thinks is sublime, another may find unbearable.

Luckily, Soaring Heart Natural Bed Company offers a wide range of organic mattresses, from the firm Organic Cotton & Wool Shikibuton, to the ultra-luxurious Madrona organic latex mattress and Aspen organic innerspring mattresses. The trick is discovering what type of mattress is best for you.

Use the tabs to answer some questions to help assess your comfort needs.

HEIGHT

Anyone who is 5' 11" or taller should probably get a queen size mattress or larger. Full and twin size mattresses are 75" long, a mere four inches longer than a 5' 11" individual. Those four inches may seem sufficient, but most people don't sleep with their heads directly at the edge of the bed. Pillows take up space and if your bed frame has a foot board, you may find yourself wishing for the leg room.

WEIGHT

Average-weight customers have a lot of options. All of our mattress offerings will be supportive, keeping your body in correct alignment, but the range of soft to firm is pretty varied. Use the following sections--body shape, sleep position, etc., to better pinpoint your comfort need.

Heavier customers need a mattress that both contours and provides a lot of support. Futons and shikibutons are often times too solid and don't have enough give, which can cause hip and shoulder pain. The Aspen organic innerspring mattress features a five inch comfort enhancer allowing for additional support and flexibility, making it perfect for heavier customers. Zoned organic latex mattresses, such as the Madrona or Sitka, are supple, forming to geography of the body and are especially supportive, keeping the body lifted and the spine aligned. The extra-firm versions of the Linden and Rowan organic latex mattresses are also a good option due to the combination of dense latex and fluffy top layers. However, extra-firm latex is very firm and is best-suited to individuals who really need the extra density.

Lighter individuals often need a mattress that is quite soft. Our firmer mattresses can be too dense to properly form to a light customer's body. The Madrona and standard firm Linden are great options because they pair supple latex with a thick layer of cloud-soft Pacific Northwest organic wool. The soft wool will hug the body, filling in the gaps and holding you in the proper position for a restorative sleep.

BODY SHAPE

Body shape make a differenceHow curvy you are has a big impact on what kind of mattress will best suit your needs. The more pronounced the curvature of your body, the more dramatic the contouring ability of your mattress needs to be.

Very curvy individuals, especially in the hip and shoulder areas, will want a mattress that is soft with plenty of fluffy materials to fill in the spaces and form around the body. Mattress height is also important--there needs to be enough depth for the mattress to form to the body. The ultimate choice for side sleepers is the Aspen organic innerspring mattress, which couples our hourglass coil design, over 70lbs of fluffy organic filling, and five extra inches of depth with the Organic Innerspring Comfort Enhancer. Other great options include mattresses featuring the Deluxe Organic Wool Topper, such as the Linden and Madrona organic latex mattresses, have a thick layer of soft wool and an even more substantial layer of supportive latex beneath.

People who fall in the middle need a mattress that has good support, plus a nice, comfortable mattress topper. Any of our standard firm and zoned-latex mattresses will provide both, as will our organic innerspring mattresses, although they are a bit firmer. Your biggest choice is whether you want the plush wool top or the soft latex.

Customers who only have minimal difference between their hips, shoulders, and waist don't need a mattress with a lot of fluff and may, in fact, prefer a firmer mattress. Organic futons and organic shikibutons are great options, as are the Laurel zoned organic latex mattress and the Tamarack organic latex mattress. The Tamarack has a mattress topper, but it's slimmer and doesn't have as much cushioning as some of the other options.

What Type of Sleeper are You?

Knowing the position you most prefer to sleep in is your best tool for finding the perfect mattress. Different positions require different responses from your mattress in order to make you comfortable. If you don't know what position you like to sleep in most, try paying extra attention tonight as you go to sleep. Where's your "go to" pose?

SIDE SLEEPER

Side Sleeper

Side sleepers need a mattress that is supportive, but soft enough to form around the curvature of the hips and the shoulders, allowing them to sink down deep and relax. A soft yet resilient comfort layer in conjunction with a pliable support layer is necessary so the mattress can shape itself to the hills and valleys of the body. Side sleeping is the most common sleep position.

The super plush layers of wool and unique spring design of the Aspen organic innerspring mattress, the supple latex of the Madrona and Sitka zoned organic latex mattresses, as well as the Linden and Rowan organic latex mattresses are our most popular mattresses for side sleepers.

BACK SLEEPER

Back Sleeper

Back sleepers don't require as much cushioning as side sleepers do, since the body's profile has less dramatic contours. However; the small of the back still needs support as well as the hips. Mattresses don't need to shape as much for the back sleeper.

The Laurel zoned organic latex mattress, Rowan and Tamarack organic latex mattresses, or our organic futons and organic shikibutons could make great choices. Read our Selecting The Right Soaring Heart Mattress for more detailed information on these set-ups.

STOMACH SLEEPER

Stomach Sleeper

Stomach sleepers need a very flat, firm mattress. If you sleep on your stomach, you do not want to be sinking too far into the mattress as that will bend your back, putting undue strain on the spine. Minimal fluff is best.

The extra firm Rowan organic latex mattress as well as our organic futons and organic shikibutons will be the stomach sleeper’s healthiest and most comfortable options.

Ailments & Sensitivities

A good, pure, healthy mattress can make ailments such as back pain, arthritis, and various chemical sensitivities easier to deal with and allow for a good night's rest. There are some chronic issues, such as injury-related pain that cannot be cured by a new mattress, but they can be eased. Take some time to read our Health Benefits page and, if applicable, speak to your physician about possible medical considerations when choosing a mattress.

ARTHRITIS & FIBROMYALGIA

People suffering from arthritis and fibromyalgia find that soft, cushioned mattresses that contain wool are very therapeutic and can lead to a more comfortable night. Plush mattresses matched with good support lift the body, taking pressure off of the joints and relieving pressure points. Taking the weight and strain off of joints can diminish arthritic pain.

Also, wool is a thermal regulator. Due to its natural breathability and moisture wicking, wool creates a pocket of body temperature air around you, keeping you cool and dry throughout the night. This causes a decrease in joint inflammation caused by heat. Learn more about our Premium Organic Wool and its Health Benefits.

BACK PAIN

Back pain is not as black and white as many think. The widely held theory that people experiencing back pain need a very firm mattress is not universally true. In fact, the type of mattress you need will depend greatly on the cause, location, and type of pain you are experiencing.

First rule for back pain sufferers looking for a new bed: do not self-diagnose. Speak to your physician or meet with a chiropractor to determine the cause of your discomfort and the best solution to remedy it.

For those who do require a very firm mattress, our organic futons and organic shikibutons are very firm and supportive with very little give (our futons and shikibutons containing latex have more, but are still quite firm). Extra-firm latex mattresses like the Rowan, or Sitka are also great options for people who do not like futon style mattresses. Organic Latex Support and Zoned Organic Latex Supports without a mattress topper are also options for people needing a very firm sleep surface.

SENSITIVITIES

People with sensitivities have found that chemical-free, hypoallergenic wool and organic latex can provide much-needed relief and allow for a full and restful night's sleep. Learn more about the advantages of wool and organic latex when it comes to sensitivities on our Health Benefits page.
