When Seattle Seahawk DeAndre Elliott broke/dislocated his ankle in the final preseason game this year, healing and getting back to work were the first things on his mind. Shortly after surgery, he was in full recoup mode and his mind turned to the bed where he’d be doing much of his recovery. Knowing the importance of quality sleep to healing, DeAndre reached out to Soaring Heart for a custom, organic sleep system.
There’s a lot of data out there linking healthy sleep to healthy bones. In an article on how sleep heals the body, Everydayhealth.com specifically calls out skeletal system health. “Eating calcium-rich foods is not all you need to do to strengthen your bones. Adequate amounts of sleep are necessary for healthy bone marrow, the spongy tissue inside the bones that contains stem cells, which eventually form blood cells in the body.” According to Michael Twery, PhD, director of the National Center on Sleep Disorder Research, “We get stem cells and immune cells from bone marrow. Healthy sleep is part of that.”
So what’s the science? Awomenshealth.com has a great, simple explanation. “Bone formation is sort of like a never-ending remodel project taking place in the body. Old bone is constantly being removed and new bone formed.” Then here comes cortisol, a stress hormone known to impede bone building. Chronic lack of sleep or poor-quality sleep increase stress and cortisol levels which, in turn, break down bone tissue. The result is a decrease in bone health.
DeAndre faces a tough road ahead. We know he’s committed to doing everything he can to heal and get back on the field. At Soaring Heart, we firmly believe healthy, natural sleep will help lay a solid foundation for DeAndre’s recovery. We’re so happy to be a part of this process and wish him the best.
