When we say all natural and organic, we mean it. Since 1982 Soaring Heart Natural Bed Company has been making mattresses and bedding using time-tested techniques, honed and polished over three decades. Soaring Heart makes everything by hand and uses only the highest quality, certified organic, materials available.
Soaring Heart works closely with our suppliers. We travel to their operations, getting to know them and their materials. We collaborate with our suppliers so we can meet and exceed our exacting standards. We take huge pride in our products and in all the people behind them.
It's because of these special relationships with our suppliers and their wonderful organic wool, organic latex, organic cotton and their commitment to upholding organic certifications that we aren’t forced to spoil our products with chemicals or synthetics. No Soaring Heart product has any chemical-based foam or synthetic fire retardants whatsoever.
Our latex is made from pure rubber tree sap, we use organic wool as our fire barrier and it is selected from only the finest sheep farms in New Zealand, and our Cotton is 100% organically grown in the cotton fields of Texas. Nothing but good, honest organic materials provided by good, honest people.
The wool and cotton encasements in this product are GOTS certified,. We are very proud that our latex used in mattresses, pillows and more is >95% organic; GOLS certified.
We recommend all futons and shikibutons be kept off the floor or folded and put away when not in use. Latex and innerspring mattress need to be kept on slats. Not keeping your latex or innerspring mattress on a slatted frame or foundation will void its warranty.
The more air that can circulate around all surfaces of your natural bed, the better. When not exposed to air, cotton can begin to mildew because the temperature difference between your body heat passing through the futon and the relative coldness of a non-breathable surface (the floor, solid plywood, etc...) can allow condensation to build up.
To prevent body moisture from getting into your bed (which can prematurely compress and harden the natural fibers and make your bed lumpy and uncomfortable), always sleep with one of our all natural organic cotton pads . Don't use a poly-blend pad. They aren't absorbent and can cause you to perspire more during sleep. Wash and dry your natural mattress pad with your sheets. Make sure the pad is completely dry before putting it back on your bed, and your mattress will stay clean and healthy for years to come.
Make sure your organic futon or shikibuton wears evenly (avoiding body impressions) by flipping and rotating it regularly, so you end up sleeping on all different parts of the bed equally. We recommend doing this once a week for the first month, then once every other week thereafter.
A couple times a year, on a sunny day, put your futon, shikibuton, or topper outside in the sun for an hour or two on each side. It's like giving your bed a natural dry-cleaning. The sun fluffs and revitalizes the fibers, discourages microbial growth, and evaporates any residual moisture. Does not apply to latex - latex can be deteriorated by sunlight.
Even if you lovingly follow all the steps listed above, there may come a day when your natural bed doesn't feel quite as comfortable as it originally did. In that case, feel free to click the button below to send us information about your product so we can schedule a revitalization time. Often times, all that's necessary to bring new life to your faithful futon is a few new layers of cotton or wool, and that can cost significantly less than a new bed. This service is for Seattle area residents only.
I love my handcrafted, organic, cotton and wool shikibuton! It is very comfortable, healthy, beautiful and versatile. Since moving to an organic bed, I no longer wake up stiff, achy or congested. I now get a deep sleep and wake up rested, refreshed and rejuvenated. Combined with the organic deluxe wool topper and tatami mats, it is truly the best bed I have ever owned. Thank you Soaring Heart Natural Beds!

Philosophically, I have changed my idea of comfort. Meaning this bed is not comfortable in the American traditional sense but in my idea of traditional sleep this hits the spot and is now very comfortable! I had some really bad SI joint problems that would leave me so locked up that getting out of my old bed was really a chore. This Shikibuton has been a major part in my arsenal to remedy my back problem and in general it fits my idea of simple living. Please let the company in some way know that I appreciate the work yall have done. Thank you again for getting me a deal on this shiki! I have recommended this to other friends.

We purchased our first shikibuton, medium buckwheat pillows, mini buckwheat pillows, and wool mattress pad from Soaring Heart and we could not be happier! I did A LOT of research on shikibutons and somehow ended up on Soaring Heart. Not only are their online reviews fabulous but their customer service is phenomenal. We appreciate their ability to answer all our questions as well as their fabulous products. This is the best sleep we have ever had! We would highly recommend their shikbutons and pillows to everyone looking for great sleep that is good for the brain and body. The only thing we wish they had is a showroom in Minnesota!
Happy Holidays!

I got the organic latex shikibuton and the wool mattress pad. Love them both. The only problem I have is I now don't want to get up in the morning because I am too comfortable. Rob was great every step of the way-helping me with shipping to Alaska, which is a feat in itself sometimes.
Thank you!

Clearance items are sold "as is" and are nonreturnable and nonrefundable. These almost-perfect items have all the same comfort and luxury our products are known for, but don't quite measure up to our exacting standards. All are made with the same high-quality materials and superior handcrafting you expect from us. What makes an item a clearance item? In the majority of cases, it’s what we refer to as a “small fabric defect” - a slight imperfection in the weave or speck of discoloration or other mark that found its way on to the fabric. Barely noticeable, and with no effect on usability, comfort, or durability. We’re picky, so what we catch during production may not even be noticeable to you. Once inside a duvet cover or pillow case, no one will know that bedding you’re getting a great deal on is anything less than perfect. The Organic Cotton & Wool Shikibuton takes the traditional cotton shikibuton and goes it one better by adding a layer of insulating, moisture resistant and fluffy 100% organic wool while still utilizing the traditional Japanese construction methods established centuries ago.
The cotton and wool construction shares the same contemporary look, supportive feel, and versatility of our Organic Cotton Shikibuton, but has the added benefits of organic wool – moisture resistance, thermal regulation, and mildew resistance - creating a more comfortable sleep experience and a longer lasting bed (the wool acts as a protective layer around the cotton).
Our shikibutons are made from layers of 100% organic cotton and wool encased in 100% organic cotton twill and then hand-tufted for long lasting comfort.
Surprisingly lightweight at approximately four inches thick (we build by weight), our shikibutons are easily folded and stored to make better use of your space and are instantly available for overnight guests. And if you want to keep the versatility of the shikibuton but want a softer sleep experience, try layering two or more shikibutons on top of each other or adding a topper for a customized and customizable bed set-up.
Organic shikibutons work best when used with a Tatami Frame and Tatami Mat set-up, which best emulates the traditional tatami mat flooring used in Japan. Preferable to the floor or bed slats (slats can be felt through a single or even two shikibutons), tatami mats allow the shikibuton to rest on a flat, solid surface while still being able to properly breathe. Good ventilation will make your shikibuton last longer. For a truly traditional experience, match your new shikibuton with an Organic Buckwheat Pillow.
Our shikibutons, like all of Soaring Heart's mattresses, are made of only the highest quality materials using time-honored construction techniques. Your shikibuton should last you eight to ten years with proper maintenance (see care tab), although we have many customers who are still comfortably using Soaring Heart shikibutons bought fifteen years ago. A modern twist on the Japanese classic, the Organic Latex Shikibuton perfectly blends the versatile, minimalist shikibuton with the supple comfort of 100% organic Dunlop latex wrapped in 100% organic wool and cotton twill.
This shikibuton is great for apartments or for people who love the feel of latex but don't want a larger traditional mattress. Surprisingly lightweight and only four inches thick, our shikibutons are easily folded and stored to make better use of your space or be available when guests are in town.
If you want to keep the versatility of the shikibuton, but want a softer sleep experience, try layering two or more shikibutons on top of each other or add a topper for a customized and customizable bed set-up. We recommend a Latex Shikibuton with an Organic Cotton Shikibuton on top of it and capped off with an Organic Latex Topper.
