It may seem a bit unconventional but wool can make an excellent mattress protector.
Because of the nature of wool fibers and the naturally occurring lanolin within wool, a wool mattress pad is very moisture repellant (as opposed to our Soaring Heart cotton mattress pad, which is less moisture resistant). When used together with our cotton pad, the two create an effective waterproof layer to protect your bed. Another great thing about wool – it is a superior temperature regulator. A wool mattress pad allows you to sleep at a comfortable temperature, while repelling and wicking away moisture to protect your mattress, shikibuton or futon for years to come.
Wool is functional, effective and comfortable, and also earth friendly and animal friendly. Soaring Heart Natural Bed Company’s wool mattress pads, made of lamb’s wool from beautiful ranches along the Oregon and California coasts, are certified organic. The perfect way to top off any organic bed is with an organic cotton mattress pad!
Made with 100% organic cotton fill, these mattress pads are a little more plush than others you will find. Coupled with an organic sateen top and percale bottom, and quilted into two inch squares, they make quite a luxurious feel. With a 15” corner and elastic running all the way around the bottom, they are easy to take on and off and don’t move around. Care instructions are simple, just wash in cool water with a low phosphate detergent and tumble dry to keep your bed clean and fresh for years to come.

Buckwheat is a pillow fill that has certainly stood the test of time. The origin of the buckwheat hull pillow stems back thousands of years to the Orient, possibly to ancient Egypt. The buckwheat pillow has gained popularity across the globe, for many good reasons!
The buckwheat pillow allows your neck to align with your spine very easily due its malleable firmness. We make our buckwheat pillow in 4 different sizes, one of which can conform to anyone’s needs. Buckwheat will also sleep cool in warmer times as it breathes easily and won’t hold moisture; this quality reduces the risk of dust mite infestations as well. A buckwheat pillow can easily be used for 5 to 10 years. As long as the hull is intact and not crumbled, it’s usable. Just put the pillow in the sun from time to time to evaporate any moisture accumulation.
Our buckwheat hull is grown and roasted - the ideal way to cleanse the buckwheat - in the Midwest. Each pillow comes with a zippered organic cotton case which allows you to take some out if it’s too lofty for you. We love our buckwheat pillows and think you will too!

Kapok is a very fine fiber derived from the seed pods of the Kapok, or “Ceiba” tree. The Kapok tree grows upwards of 200 feet, towering over rainforest canopies and the trees do not need to be cut down to obtain the fiber.
At Soaring Heart we have found that Kapok makes an amazing pillow fill! Kapok pillows offer a unique, soft feel that resembles a combination of down and wool. We sew the organic cotton case and fill the kapok pillows ourselves, so it can be modified for comfort if needed. A kapok pillow would be the perfect addition to your organic mattress or futon.

There are many benefits to sleeping with latex foam rubber. Latex is naturally anti microbial and mildew resistant. You will never have to worry about dust mites with latex pillows, which makes this a great option for people suffering from allergies. Latex also doesn’t off gas chemical residual like polyurethane or viscoelastic foams (memory foam). Latex is a very resilient material that will hold its shape for 5 years or longer without dipping out or taking impressions. Latex pillows also give great support and our customers have been very happy with them for many years now!
We carry four varieties of latex pillows:
Natural latex is the processed milk that is derived from Rubber Trees (Hevea Brasiliensis). Synthetic latex is also known as “SBR”; or styrene butadiene rubber. Although petroleum products are used to synthesize SBR latex, the finished product is stable latex that does not off gas. We carry all the latex options so you can decide which best works for you.
At Soaring Heart Natural Bed Company, we are continually dedicated to using the highest quality materials we can find, and to use organic or sustainable materials whenever possible. We’re at our Seattle store everyday ready to provide you with helpful and accurate information regarding our natural bedding products and materials used.
As a time-tested favorite material for making truly luxurious natural pillows, wool is wondrous for a snuggly and soft night of sleep. Wool keeps you warm in the cold of winter and cool in the heat of summer. Wool pillows have a lovely, springy softness to them, and they're a great choice for fighting allergies of all kinds because wool is naturally anti-microbial.
At Soaring Heart Natural Bed Company, our Organic Wool Pillows are handmade right here in Washington with GOTS-certified organic wool batting (a super-pure blend of wool from West Coast farms that is 75% organic) layered inside a handmade organic cotton case. Choose the soft Wool Pillow for back and stomach sleeping or the firm Wool Pillow for side sleeping.
Our Organic Wool Bolus Pillows are full of pea-sized organic wool puffs instead of layers of batting, so they're fluffable, scrunchable, and completely pliable. The Bolus Pillows are similar to a down pillow, but with superior loft and springiness. Plus, bolus pillows are washable since the wool puffs are essentially pre-felted. To wash, use cold water in the soak cycle, followed by the spin cycle, and tumble dry on no-heat or hang dry. When dry, the wool bolus puffs can be removed from the case, fluffed with your fingers and put back in the case for maximum airiness and loft.
We also have travel size and kids Bolus Pillows! These half-sized pillows are made just like our other bolus pillows, only smaller (12" x 19") and with half the loft to fit perfectly under little heads or in your bag for travel. Each comes with a removable organic cotton sateen pillowcase for safe keeping.
If you suffer from allergies, or tend to get warm at night, the wool pillows may be the best choice for you! Wool pillows along with our other organic pillows for your bed are a great addition to any bedding to create a healthy and clean atmosphere for achieving your best rest. At Soaring Heart Natural Bed Company, we strive to give you the most natural bedding so that you rest better and experience life more fully. The Japanese have been sleeping on traditional firm bedding for centuries, because they realize the benefits that bedding can have for your neck, back, and overall health. Here at Soaring Heart Natural Bed Company, we offer the complete traditional Japanese set for you to improve your body’s alignment in sleep.
The traditional Japanese bedding set includes the buckwheat pillow, which is firm and supports the curvature of the spine. This set also incorporates a cotton mattress pad, which is used to protect the thin and firm shikibuton. The traditional tatami mat is made from compressed rice straw. It has a little give but is still firm and supportive. All of these products rest on the tatami frame, which completes the set! If you are experiencing neck or back problems, a firm Japanese bed may be the perfect solution to ease your aches and pains.
Japanese bedding and other natural bedding is very easy to take care of in order to maintain its quality. Traditionally the Japanese fold up their tatami every day, which allows it to air out and hold its shape. Just fold lengthwise into thirds, and set your pillow on top to hold it down. This will also let you show off your tatami during the day.
Soaring Heart Natural Bed Company supplies the entire traditional Japanese bedding set made from eco-friendly and all natural products. Our experts in Seattle will help you choose the best products for you so that you have the best sleep possible. explore our website to view all of our natural bedding products, or contact us at 202-282-1717 or 877-288-1717 for more information today! Sleep well.
This year, as part of our participation in our local United Way campaign's "Day of Caring" on September 16, we're closing down our shop early to focus on building pillows for donation to those in need. Our team has already committed to build more than 100 pillows on the 16th, with the primary recipient being the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center's "Pete Gross House," which provides long-term comfortable and supportive living accommodations for cancer patients and families who are not from the Seattle area.
At Soaring Heart we take the time to build in love and care in all our products. We are grateful for almost 30 years of customer support - and welcome you to stop by anytime to shop, say hello, or just share hugs!
