Our thanks to the team from the United Way of King County who helped us distribute 80 of our hand-crafted, all organic bed pillows to clients of Compass Housing in downtown Seattle. Not only did we have alot of fun with the pillows we also had time to wash a few walls and hopefully help some of Seattle's homeless population sleep abit better!
We also want to thank the Boys & Girls Club of Bellevue - as students from their Teen Center helped us very efficiently build these 80 pillows. As you might imagine, the combination of their youthful enthusiasm, the United Way's organizational skills, and the community services provided by the staff at Compass makes for a rewarding, and high impact community gift. Last weekend our volunteer team from the Bellevue's Boys & Girls Club set a new record building our shredded latex bed pillows. As you can see from the pictures this was one busy team. The pillows they built will be available at the Soaring Heart location in Bellevue during the Taste of Main at a special Boys and Girls Club Price of just $65.

Flame retardants continue to be a major contamination problem in our homes. While big steps have been taken to remove these chemicals from many products – studies continue to prove they are appearing everywhere especially our laundry, household dust and community waste water systems. Bottom line: consumer beware – it’s a lot harder to live in a safe, healthy environment than we may think.

While we might wish for all manufacturers to guarantee open, transparent labeling for all their ingredients, until that happens we do our best to support community watchdogs like the Washington Toxics Coalition. This weekend we held an event at our Bellevue showroom to celebrate our past recipients of the Soaring Heart Sleep Sponsorship, which goes to a Bastyr student studying naturopathic medicine. As any mother can tell you when a baby is born sleep deprivation takes on a whole new meaning. Those few precious hours of sleep you do get are more akin to a constantly interrupted nap than any type of actual, restful sleep. It can be frustrating beyond measure for both parents, but especially mom. Until she gets into a regular cycle of pumping breast milk so dad can help out and give her that extra sleep she so desperately needs, making sure that tiny wonder gets all the nutrients required to stay healthy and grow up to be big and strong is entirely up to her.
